About me

George P. Matysek Jr. is the senior writer for The Catholic Review in Baltimore. His beats include Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski, the Seton Vicariate, the Maryland Catholic Conference/Maryland General Assembly, Catholic Relief Services and religious vocations.

George has won more than 30 national and regional journalism awards from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association, the Catholic Press Association and National Right to Life. He has reported from Guyana, Guatemala, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Some of the numerous political, religious, entertainment and sports leaders he has interviewed include Justice Antonin Scalia, Martin Sheen, Brooks Robinson, John Harbaugh, Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo, Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Gov. Martin J. O’Malley, Peter Angelos, Arthur Modell, Sister Helen Prejean, Matt Birk, James Clack and more.

A proud Baltimorean, George is a product of St. Clare School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Essex. He has a bachelor’s degree in history and writing from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in history from UMBC.

In his spare time, George enjoys lindy hopping, running, swimming, playing tennis & racquetball and cheering the Baltimore Orioles.
